Serevent Diskhaler discontinued

Serevent Diskhaler (salmeterol xinafoate) and disks have been discontinued by GlaxoSmithKline following a change in manufacturing process and a decline in demand.

Prescribers should consider the estimated stock exhaustion dates before issuing new prescriptions for Serevent Diskhaler

Stocks of the combination pack (Diskhaler plus disks) are expected to run out in April 2014. Supplies of the disk refill pack are already exhausted.

Healthcare professionals should identify patients currently using this device and discuss alternative treatment options.

For a guide to available inhalers for the treatment of asthma and COPD, see the Asthma and COPD Preparations and Compatible Devices table and the Guide to Breath-Actuated Inhalers.
