Protopic for maintenance therapy

The licensed indications for Protopic (tacrolimus) ointment have been extended to include maintenance therapy of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis for the prevention of flares and prolongation of flare-free intervals.

Maintenance treatment is suitable for patients experiencing a high frequency of disease exacerbations (occurring four or more times a year) who have had an initial response to a maximum of six weeks treatment of twice daily application of tacrolimus ointment. An initial response is defined as lesions cleared, almost cleared or mildly affected.

For maintenance the ointment should be applied once a day twice weekly with a gap of two to three days between applications. At the first signs of a recurrence (flare) of disease symptoms the treatment dose should be resumed. Maintenance therapy should be reviewed after 12 months.
