Monofer can be used to treat iron deficiency anaemia when oral iron preparations are ineffective or inappropriate, or when there is a clinical need to deliver iron rapidly.
Diagnosis of iron deficiency anaemia should be based on appropriate laboratory tests (eg, serum ferritin, serum iron, transferrin saturation or hypochromic red cells).
The dose and dosage schedule for Monofer must be established for each individual patient based on the total iron deficit.
After the total iron deficit has been corrected, continued therapy with Monofer may be required to maintain target levels of haemoglobin and acceptable limits of other iron parameters.
Evidence of a therapeutic response can be seen within a few days of administration as an increase in the reticulocyte count.
