Lescol for children

Lescol (fluvastatin) capsules and Lescol XL (fluvastatin) prolonged release tablets are now licensed for the treatment of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia in children over nine years.

The Lescol (fluvastatin) range was previously contraindicated in children under 18 years.

The recommended starting dose is 40mg or 80mg daily; 20mg may be adequate in mild cases.

The safety and efficacy of Lescol and Lescol XL has not been studied for treatment periods longer than two years. The summary of product characteristics also warns that the potential risks and benefits of treatment should be carefully evaluated in pre-pubertal children as experience is limited in this group.
