Patients who use the NovoPen Echo or NovoPen 5 insulin pens are being urged to check if their device belongs to an affected batch and to contact the manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, for replacement of the cartridge holder if so.
Using a device with a cracked or broken cartridge holder could result in the device delivering a smaller dose of insulin than expected, leading to hyperglycaemia. The risk of experiencing hyperglycaemia as a result of using a device with an affected cartridge holder is estimated to be less than 0.1% (ie, 1 in 1000 patients).
The affected batch numbers are listed in a press release from Novo Nordisk. Patients should note the batch number on the pen can differ from that on the box.
To request a replacement cartridge holder, patients should register their contact details (name, address, phone number, email and number of affected cartridge holders) at www.novonordisk.co.uk or contact the Novo Nordisk Customer Care line on 0845 600 5055 (8am-8pm Mon-Fri and 8am-4pm Sat-Sun). They will receive an unaffected cartridge holder within 7 days.
Any adverse events or complaints relating to NovoPen Echo and NovoPen 5, including a damaged cartridge holder, should be reported to Novo Nordisk's Customer Care line.
