Combination gel for scalp and body psoriasis

Dovobet Gel is a combined preparation of calcipotriol and betamethasone (50/500 microgram per gram), licensed for both scalp and body psoriasis. It is presented as a clear, alcohol-free gel.

Calcipotriol and betamethasone have complementary mechanisms of action in the treatment of psoriasis. Calcipotriol, a vitamin D analogue, is thought to inhibit keratinocyte proliferation; betamethasone, a corticosteroid, acts as an anti-inflammatory.

The combination gel was tested in randomised, double-blind studies in patients with body psoriasis (n=364) or scalp psoriasis (n=1,505). Response rates observed after the recommended duration of treatment (eight and four weeks, respectively) were significantly higher for the combination gel than for the calcipotriol, betamethasone or vehicle gels alone.
