Tygacil treats complicated infections

Tygacil (tigecycline) is the first of a new class of glycylcycline antibiotics that has been approved for the treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections and for complicated intra-abdominal infections.

Species against which Tygacil’s activity has been satisfactorily demonstrated in clinical trials include Staph. aureus, Strep. aglactiae, Strep. anginosus group, Strep. pyogenes, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter cloacae, E. coli, Klebsiella oxytoca and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Tygacil is administered by intravenous infusion over 30 to 60 minutes. The recommended dose for adults is an initial dose of 100mg followed by 50mg every 12 hours for five to 14 days depending on the severity and site of infection.

The basic NHS price for 10 x 5ml vials each containing 50mg tigecycline is £323.10.
