Novel head lice treatment introduced

Hedrin lotion (dimeticone 4%) is a novel head lice treatment with a different mode of action to other available preparations.

Unlike the organophosphorus compounds (eg, permethrin, phenothrin), dimeticone is thought to act by a physical process to cover the lice, thereby disrupting its ability to maintain its water balance. The lice is unable to excrete excess water, which ultimately results in death.

Hedrin lotion should be applied to dry hair and allowed to dry naturally. The lotion should be left on the hair overnight or for a minimum of eight hours before washing out with normal shampoo. The treatment should be repeated seven days later.

Hedrin 4% lotion is presented in 50 ml and 150 ml bottles at an NHS price of £2.98 and £6.83, respectively.
