The provincial Senate voted unanimously to prohibit bags made from polyethylene or other traditional plastic from being used in retail outlets, which have a 12 to 24 month window in which to change their bags.
The Argentine national parliament is currently considering a law, presented in May 2007, to ban non-biodegradable plastic bags from hypermarkets and supermarkets from January 2013
Uruguay and Chile have also recently presented plans to reduce their usage of plastic bags.
The UK's Packaging and Films Association has long campaigned that a single-use plastic bag remains the most efficient and environmentally friendly use of material, particularly in comparison to paper bags.
The Province of Buenos Aires does not include the Argentine capital, which constitutes an autonomous city, although they both house similar populations of some 13m people.

The Argentine province of Buenos Aires has decreed that all plastic bags used within the province must be made from biodegradable material or paper within two years.
