Levofloxacin now available as eye drops

The quinolone antibiotic levofloxacin has been formulated as eye drops for the treatment of bacterial external ocular infections.

Oftaquix contains levofloxacin 5 mg per ml. The recommended dose is one to two drops into the affected eye(s) every two hours up to eight times daily while awake for the first two days, then four times daily on days three to five. The usual treatment duration is five days, but depends on the severity and course of the infection.

The basic NHS price for a 5 ml bottle is £6.95.
