Prescribing Notes

Tube and sip feeding

Tube and sip feeds are for enteral feeding. They are readily assimilated and may be prescribed where patients are unable to eat normally, or have severe malabsorption or malnourishment.

Preparations in this section are classified by the Department of Health as Borderline Substances and may be prescribed at NHS expense for the standard ACBS indications: short bowel syndrome, intractable malabsorption, pre-op. preparation of patients who are undernourished, proven inflammatory bowel disease, following total gastrectomy, bowel fistulae, disease related malnutrition and dysphagia. Some products have extra indications as shown.
Note: In all cases, prescribers are advised to endorse the prescription 'ACBS', and to indicate precisely either the number of packs required or the daily quantity and length of treatment. Do not use the term OP.
